So, upfront...this isn’t the highest point reachable by car. I’m 400 yards short of the highest road in BC. BUT, that’s REALLY far, around 900 miles or 1500km away round trip.

Kinja'd!!!

So, I chose to try and couple the not insignificant distance of 1.2km (nearly 4000ft) in elevation with the remoteness of the location for some BONUS POINTS.

I roped in my dad, and more importantly, his 2018 Rubicon and we set off. While we drove a much more reasonable 450km round trip (280 miles) a significant amount of time was spent offroad.

We drove up a BC 4WD Association trail to the Nahatlatch fire lookout tower, signed the guestbook and took in the views:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

We then drove to Grizzly Falls:

Before making camp on the side of the lake...which also offered up some nice views:

I snagged a TON of oppo rally challenges, so look for those on @CarsofFortlangleyOppoRally (instagram) soon.

Yeah I figured somewhere in Tioga Pass would be the right item. Yosemite can definitely check off some of the other items too. But since it would be an overnight trip to go that far I'm gonna skip it due to covid.

That’s good be one nice hill. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a very tacky mansion built on it.

That’s some spectacular scenery.

Highest elevation in Wisconsin is just over 1900 ft. It’s called Timms Hill. The only access is a hiking trail. It’s described as a very easy hike with a total elevation gain of less than 100ft lol.

More local to me is a place called St Peters Dome. It’s a pretty good hike, with a total 400ft elevation gain, but only 1600ft at its highest point.

345 feet? That’s all?

If you want to put up a high-rise in downtown St. Petersburg, you’ll need a permit from the Federal Aviation Authority, because there is the Albert Whitted airport right in the downtown area, so you must keep your building from infringing on the flight paths into its runways.

One of the construct ion jobs I worked on , a high-rise called “Ovation, ” had a maximum permitted height of 360 feet above sea level. If you’ve ever worked with architects, you can guess the design elevation of the highest point on the building: 359'-11". The fun part is, the thermal coefficients of concrete and of steel are approximately the same, one part in ten thousand per 15° Fahrenheit. The ground elevation at the base of that building was about 10 feet above sea level. So if the temperature of the building goes from 45° F. (typical for a “cold” “winter” day here in Florida) to 90° F. (all day long, three to five months out of the year) then the building will actually expand by about an inch and a quarter.

Anyway, beside that one, I also worked on “ Barnett Tower,” which for a w hile was the tallest building in the city, and “ One St. Petersburg,” which at 487 feet is the tallest building in town today. I never went up on the roof slab; t he highest I ever got was the top living floor, at 446 feet. Anyway , in a building 7 00 feet from the waterfront of Tampa Bay, I was a hundred feet higher than the hi ghest spot on land in the entire state.

That’s certainly so me pu rty country!  I need to find a chance to get to BC and do some proper exploring - the only places I’ve been are Vancouver and Whistler . Not going to happen this year, unfortunately :-(

Highest road in NZ isn’t really a challenge - it’s the Mt Hutt s kifield road, at 6700-odd feet. Gravel, but driving it doesn’t take anything special unless it’s really icy: they run coaches up there. N ice view f ro m the top though ...

It looks surprisingly similar to Washington State, but for some unclear reason it’s radically cleaner. Like everything is well-maintained and clean in BC relative to WA.

The price new on those is pretty nuts. I usually buy whole cars for less than that.

I keep my eyes peeled for deals on used ones. Looking for hard shell style these days. Faster setup and more aerodynamic when folded up, may be able to add a roof rack to it to carry more on top the tent etc.

Clearwater’s pretty cool, that’s where I live. My parents moved to Clearwater in 1963, and I hung out in downtown Clearwater and Clearwater Beach a lot in the following ten years.

The weird thing is, it still looks like it did fifty years ago. Tampa is changed a lot, Dunedin, where they moved in ‘66, has been completely transformed, St. Petersburg is almost unrecognizable compared with back then, between Dunedin and Tarpon Springs used to be 95% woods, swamps and orange groves and now there’s not an undeveloped 10 acre site in the whole zone. But Clearwater is a timeless miniature town inside a snow globe, except without the snow, of course.

In New Hampshire that’s an easy one. Mt. Washington @6,288 although you can’t quite get the car up to the very peak, maybe 50' short in elevation or so.

I’ve never driven it, but hiked it several times. It’s a little weird hiking up and then having fat tourists in jeans and hoodies lining up for photos at the summit sign.

Kinja'd!!!

There are some buildings up there, a weather observatory, and there’s a cog railway up to the top, too.

Kinja'd!!!

Not a great pic below - summit sign high point on the left. Not a lot of people because it was a gray overcast day everywhere in the state except up there. That’s extremely rare, it’s usually the other way around.

That’s stunning. I think the highest I ever got on a mountain was at the observatory on Haleakala in Maui @ 10,013 ft.

A little h ard to breathe there.

That’s funny, I’ve been up Haleakala by car more than once, but never Mt. Washington by car. Anyway, that’s pretty surreal, on a tropical island. I know some people who used to longboard down that road, or at least sections of it. Whole lotta nope for me, thanks.
